Taunton sits in the Tone valley on a mix of river alluvium and clay. Properties towards the river and out along the levels edge have a high water table, so surface water has nowhere to soak away in winter. Patios that were laid flat, without falls or a drainage route, turn into standing water within a season and then start lifting as frost gets underneath.
The town also has a lot of pre-1930s housing where the original rear yards were laid in concrete or thin flagstones straight onto the soil. Those surfaces move, crack and drop away from the house, and once water is running back towards the wall rather than away from it you have a damp problem as well as an ugly patio. Rebuilding properly - dig out, compact, lay to a fall, drain the low point - costs more once and stops the cycle.

Soakaways do not work everywhere in Taunton. Where the ground is already saturated we design falls and channel drains that take water to somewhere it can actually go.
